The term "civil society" refers to the third sector of society, the volunteer sector and the spaces where collective action takes place. We think of it as the first sector.

Today, civil society organizations are in a state of flux. They have come under scrutiny in recent years for their performance and effectiveness. Digital technologies and their penetration into all aspects of life have also changed the way in which citizens and civil society organizations interact with each other, and the state.

Technology has enabled speed and dynamism. The traditional roles of these organizations as watchdogs, organisers, facilitators, agitators and advocates can be made more powerful when technology is used properly. We support organisations which are engaged in this endeavour.
